Is Long COVID a New Disease?
Long COVID may seem like an unfamiliar challenge for doctors and researchers who do not have experience in post-acute infection syndromes (PAIS).
But for patients with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome), the symptoms and complaints are recognizable.
Like other viruses, such as the Epstein-Barr virus (after mononucleosis), Lyme, Zika, Dengue, and Q fever, we observe a familiar “footprint” of the causative agent and a pattern of reactions and effects within the body. For us, with 30 years of experience in researching and treating ME/CFS, Long COVID is another variant of a well-known theme.

What is Long COVID?
Long COVID has three components:
1. The Properties of the Virus
How the virus affects humans and causes specific changes.
2. Reactions and Effects in the Immune System
The impact on the immune system contributes to persistent symptoms.
3. The Patient’s Survival Responses
How the body tries to recover and survive, presenting symptoms like autonomic dysfunction (POTS), physical and cognitive limitations, and fatigue.

Survival: A Variant of Hibernation
Our research began 30 years ago with studying the survival mechanisms of patients. Today, we understand this well enough to offer treatments with medications and other methods to alleviate these symptoms.

The Core of the Problem: The Immune System
We believe the core issue in Long COVID lies within the immune system. A “thorn” that doesn’t disappear causes a persistent altered state. We have strong indications that we have identified this thorn and that medications may effectively treat this disruption. Low Dose Naltrexone is one example.

Is Long COVID Different from Known Post-Acute Infection Syndromes?
Although Long COVID shares similarities with other PAIS, there are differences. In Long COVID, the virus – or remnants of it – seem to remain in the body and continue to disrupt it. This requires specific treatments, such as removing microthrombi and detaching viral remnants from receptors.
With these new insights, we can improve symptoms, often with remarkable results in cases of Long COVID.

Nicotine for Long COVID:
Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed millions of lives worldwide, is now followed by a wave of chronic conditions, often referred to as Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) or Long COVID. There is no proven treatment for Long COVID, leading patients and researchers to explore potential therapeutic options.
Treatment of Long COVID and ME/CFS with Ketotifen (Zaldiar®)
Introduction
Long COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are among the most disabling chronic conditions worldwide, significantly impacting the quality of life for millions of people [1]. Although the precise mechanisms underlying these conditions are not fully understood, recent research points to a possible role of mast cell activation [2,3].
